The Global Positioning System (GPS) was originally developed by the US Military who launched satellites (the first satellite was launched in 1978) into orbit. The system consists of a network of between 24 and 32 satellites orbiting the earth at about 7000 mph, in a precise manner, two times every day.

In the early days only the military could track the signals but in the 1980’s it was opened up to the general public.

Before we get into the specifics it is important to realize that the use of the satellite network is free, there is no subscription required.

The other benefit is the system is essentially unaffected by weather and it is accurate anywhere in the world. Some might recall the Loran system which was popular with boaters before GPS became popular.

Loran was capable of providing a very accurate position but only in limited areas where the transmission of signals was sufficient and provided the weather was not adverse.

GPS transmission satellites orbit the earth in a very precise and constant manner. As they orbit 12,000 miles above, they transmit radio signals 24 hours a day, every day. The receivers we use simply receive the transmitted signals and compare the time the signal was transmitted against the time it was received. Knowing the signals travel at a fixed rate of speed makes it easy to calculate how far the satellite and the receiver are from each other.

If this process were done with only one satellite the result would not be useful for us since it would only indicate a possible arc of a position. To provide accuracy the receiver has to receive signals from a minimum of 3 satellites.

In actual use, the receivers typically track the signals from many more satellites.
In order to provide data like speed, direction, distance traveled, etc. the receiver repeats the position calculation on a continual basis and thus updates the position and other data. The signal transmitted includes the satellites ID, the satellites position at any given time and the date and time.

Accuracy of the receivers has improved with technology advances to an average of about 15 meters. In real practice it is common to see accuracy within a meter or two, at least at times.

When GPS was opened up for public use the signal was intentionally degraded by the Government which was referred to as Selective Availability (SA). SA has been discontinued so civilians now enjoy full accuracy of the system.

Technology referred to as Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) available with some receivers improves accuracy to about 5 meters. Receivers equipped with Differential technology apply corrections to the data based on other known references.

The end result is accuracy and functionality of GPS receivers to the point we all can rely upon. As a result we now see and enjoy GPS watches, auto and boat GPS navigation systems, GPS cell phones.

Mobile phones are great, I mean they allow you to stay in touch with the office, go down the pub and basically keep on the move. My first mobile phone was really basic, giving you just the ability to make calls and nothing else.

Apple iPhone.

Seen by some as the ultimate smartphone the iPhone marries a mobile phone, internet surfing device and MP3 player in one box the size of a deck of cards complete with touch screen. Nokia N95.

When Nokia wanted this classified as a computer rather than a phone we can see why. It’s got a 5 megapixel camera, a GPS receiver, a MP3 player with 8GB of memory, a 3.5mm headphones jack and built in Wi-Fi as well as 3G connectivity. Selling over a million handsets, the phone has just been upgraded to the newly announced N96, not due till later in the year. That version will offer the same tech specs but in a slightly more refined package with a bigger screen and the promise of a bug free interface.

Sony Ericsson Walkman W890.

You might have associated music with the Walkman in the eighties, but now it’s more likely to bring your mind to the company’s range of mobile phones in the 2000s. The latest handset from Sony Ericsson is the W890 a mobile phone aimed at the mature phone user, worrying that’s over 25’s. The super thin W890i, which will follow on from the company’s W880i handset will ditch the prickly keys, come with a 2GB MemoryStick in the box, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a host of other features including the company’s latest music software, version 3 and its SensMe application that picks tunes on a given mood or tempo.

The new phone will offer HSDPA connectivity rather than standard 3G of the W880 and come a choice of three colours: Espresso Black, Mocha Brown and Sparking Silver.

Here are some of my favourite ones.

Cranking MP3 player.

With a 1GB capacity and a design that won’t win any red dot awards, the main USP for this new MP3 player is its green credentials. One minute’s worth of cranking will give you playback of 10 minutes - although there is USB charging too for when your arm gets tired. Including shipping, it’ll cost 55 euros, which is around 43 pounds, but consider what you’ll save on batteries.

Husqvarna solar powered automatic lawnmower.

It might set you back a cool 2000 pounds but working autonomously, the lawnmower will cut up to 2300 square metres of grass and can be programmed to come on at certain times or days of the week. Users can define the cutting area by laying a metal wire around the edge of their garden. The auto mower also has sensors in the device so it can avoid garden furniture. Solving the problem of collecting the grass, the motor’s three sharp blades cut the grass short enough as to scatter it back on the lawn. The mower will cut for around 40 minutes, and then charge for 40 minutes in its charging station, however the solar panels on its back mean that on a sunny day the device will be able to stay out cutting for up to 50 percent longer.

Efergy meter.

The Efergy meter is a compact monitor that allows the user to see electricity consumption in real time in your home. Made up of three components: a portable display monitor, a sensor which is clipped around the power cable feeding electricity into the premises, and a transmitter which is connected to the sensor and which sends the information to the monitor the data on the screen of the Efergy meter is refreshed every 5 seconds, so the impact on power usage of turning an electrical appliance on or off can be seen immediately. The Efergy meter costs 44.95.

The Standby Buster.

You want to turn your television off at the main, but the sockets at the back and out of the reach of your arm. The Stanby buster basically gives you a remote for your plug. The easy to use, remote-controlled electrical socket lets you switch off multiple appliances completely rather than leaving them in standby mode - all from a single button press. Sockets are simply plugged into existing power outlets allowing any connected appliances to be switched on and off using the remote control. Standby Buster uses Radio Frequency (RF) rather than Infra-Red (IR) to switch appliances on and off, so it is not impaired by objects in its way.

Moixa USBCELL batteries.

The USBCELL as an environmentally-friendly alternative to normal AA batteries. The top of one side flips up to reveal a USB connector, and the battery simply plugs into an open port. It takes five hours to charge one of the cells if it was fully discharged; each battery has a capacity of 1300 mAH. The USBCELL cost around 12.99 for two AA batteries.
